GEAR grows; annual meeting set
The GEAR Foundation Board of Trustees held its regular monthly meeting Tuesday evening, April 22 at 7:30. In attendance at the session were all eleven elected trustees. GEAR GROWS
The board accepted reports from a number of its committees indicating the continuing growth in the scope of the services the foundation offers the community. The newly established program of games nights has proven successful; it will be continued along with the coffeehouse which drew over thirty people to its debut April 18. The foundation regularly sponsors a transexual rap group which meets the first and third Thursdays of each month; in addition, it has had a hand in the expansion of services to those eighteen years old and younger in supporting the youth rap group which meets at the downtown public library. This support responds to the need represented by the ten per cent of all notline callers who deal with the unique problems of this age group. The board of trustees

sion of special interest workshops ("community centers/educational services") with only a limited chance for contact. The main focus of the general meetings was the connection between the various organizations and the continuance of O.G.R.C. as a functioning coalition. Perhaps one of the most important things to come out of the conference. was a current listing of organizations, statewide. provided by Bob Rohme of Columbus who spent most of the conference updating
it.
A highlight of the conference was the presentation of the play. "A Late Snow" by Jane Chambers. Bringing five lesbian women together in the last storm of winter, the play focuses on their loves past and present. It asks if one should settle for a convenient relationship or take risks to achieve a more fulfilling and nurturing love. The play was well-done and stirred the conference to a standing ovation.
In the conclusion of the conference, the four remaining O.G.R.C board members seemed heartened by the interest of the statewide groups expressed for O.G.R.C.'s continuance The Board set up a meeting for May 10 in Columbus. In the meantime, with eight Board positions vacant, applications for the four male and four female positions are being sought. WASHINGTON

both in 1978 and 1980, Pauken used Mattox's pro-justice position on the 1977 McDonald Amendment to the Legal Services Corporation funding act against him.
It is ironic that Pauken's strident anti-gay attacks probably played a key-role in activating the gay and lesbian communities on behalf of Mattox (D-Dallas), despite the fact that Representative Mattox had subsequently supported the 1980 version of the McDonald amendment.
The result was a wide margin for Mattox in the heavily gay precincts of Oak Lawn, possibly providing the marginal difference in this over-all tight race. Pauken apparently attributes his loss to the gay community, although it is unclear whether Mattox shares this view.
Mattox has consistently refused to co-sponsor pro-gay civil rights legislation, and his position on future anti-gay amendments is unclear.
At ACTION, Pauken replaces Sam Brown, an outspoken advocate of justice for lesbians and gay men.
